Your net worth is a measure of your financial health, and increasing it is a great way to build long-term wealth and achieve your financial goals. The aim is not to get rich, it is to be wealthy, if you have a job that pays a salary of £100,000 a year, however, your expenses are £100,000 a year too – you may look rich but remove that salary and it will all come crashing down.

One of the best ways to track your wealth is to calculate your net worth, this is something I started 6x years ago and I plot my income on a graph that calculates my actual net worth and the percentage increase each time it is tracked.

Although this blog will highlight ways to save money, you can really only save so much and cut expenses down to the bare minimum – if you do not increase your income you will not rapidly grow your net worth.

Here are some tips for increasing your net worth:

  1. Increase your income: One of the easiest ways to increase your net worth is to increase your income. This can be done by asking for a promotion at work, starting a side hustle or business, or investing in income-producing assets such as stocks, real estate, or rental properties. Even just a £100 extra per month – which can be negotiated, earned, or simply acquired through a part-time remote job, will be £1,200 extra a year. Add this into a 5% interest account and that money alone will compound and generate £754.67 in 10x years, imagine if you keep adding to that pot, how much will you generate? If you continued to add £1,200 into that account each year then you would have £1977.72 in the account from what would be £12,000 investment in total- all coming from £100 a month.
  2. Reduce your expenses: Another way to increase your net worth is to reduce your expenses. Look for ways to cut back on your monthly bills, such as renegotiating your internet or phone bill, cooking at home instead of eating out, or finding cheaper alternatives for products and services you use regularly.
  3. Pay off debt: Debt is a major liability that can decrease your net worth. To increase your net worth, focus on paying off high-interest debt, such as credit card balances or personal loans, as quickly as possible. This will not only reduce your liabilities but also free up more cash to invest in assets that can generate income. You will never generate wealth if you are paying credit cards or high-interest loans (Even mortgages are creeping into 5%+ interest rates). I have met individuals who are investing in stocks & shares generating 10% return which looks great – but they have a credit card that is over 20% in interest and this far outweighs the benefits of the initial investment. Although a mortgage is not classed as a high-interest debt, paying over each month could save thousands on the term of the mortgage overall.
  4. Invest in appreciating assets: Investing in assets that appreciate in value, such as stocks, real estate, or artwork, can help increase your net worth over time. Make sure to do your research and invest in assets that align with your risk tolerance and financial goals. Only invest in what you know, and start small. The average millionaire has more than 3x sources of income – if you only have your salary and that salary is removed you will have no income. Do not save to save, save to invest, and the investments will then compound. By paying yourself first you can build up a stock portfolio, negotiate a pay rise at work, and start a side hustle, that will naturally build your wealth in a rapid way.
  5. Diversify your investments: Diversifying your investments can help reduce risk and increase the likelihood of higher returns. Consider investing in a mix of stocks, bonds, real estate, and other assets to create a well-rounded portfolio that can weather market fluctuations and economic downturns.
  6. Maximize your retirement savings: Investing in a retirement account is a great way to increase your net worth over time. Make sure to take advantage of any employer-matching contributions and max out your contributions each year to maximize the potential growth of your retirement savings. If you work in the public sector, they are renowned to offer a high matching contribution – I have seen a 30% contribution in one college in England which is a crazy amount!
  7. Continuously track your net worth: Finally, it’s important to track your net worth regularly to monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. Use a spreadsheet or online tool to keep track of your assets and liabilities and calculate your net worth each month or quarter.

Increasing your net worth is a long-term goal that requires patience, discipline, and a commitment to financial responsibility. By following these tips and staying focused on your financial goals, you can build long-term wealth and achieve financial freedom.

Financial freedom is a goal that many people aspire to, but it can be challenging to achieve. Financial freedom means having enough money to live the life you want without having to worry about money. It means being able to make choices based on what you want, not what you can afford. Your wealth will feed into financial freedom – yes having a mansion is incredible, but do I want to work until I’m 90 to pay for it, no thank you. I’m happy with a home paid off, owned car, and expenses meaning I can increase my stock portfolio – therefore generating passive income for future me.
